The national statistics institution (INSEE) registeres about 380 000 horses. With horses unknown from institutions is estimated between 500 and 550 000 horses.

Ponies 60% unshod and 40% shod (mainly the front feet)
Saddle horses 60% shod and 40% trimmed (mares,foals...)
Draft horses 20% shod (carriage horses) and 80% trimmed (shod once a year for presentations)
