Objectives
The Farriers Registration Act is an Act to prevent and avoid suffering by and cruelty to horses arising from the shoeing of horses by unskilled persons; to promote the proper shoeing of horses; to promote the training of farriers and shoeing smiths; to provide for the establishment of a Farrier Registration Council to register persons engaged in farriery and the shoeing of horses; to prohibit the shoeing of horses by unqualified persons; and for purposes connected therewith.

2,400 Registered Farriers, 350 Apprentices
Qualifications Required
4 years and 2 months training which includes National Vocational Qualification Level 3, Modern Apprenticeship, Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers.
Alternatives accepted:
- Army BII
- Registered Farrier (Ireland) + 2 yearswork experience
- Certified Journeyman Farrier (USA) + 2 yearswork experience
Any nation wishing to have its nationally recognised qualification added to this list should apply to the Farriers Registration Council.
Contributions
Initial Registration Fee (2000): £47.50 Annual Retention Fee (2000): £95.00
Activities
Registration of farriers, recognition of overseas qualifications, codes of conduct and complaints against registered farriers, investigation and prosecution of unregistered farriers, management of apprenticeship scheme

Publication of Farriers Bulletin 3-4 times per year

The Act was created for the welfare of the horse, not as a protection for farriers

Every farrier working in Great Britain (except the Highlands and Islands of Scotland) must be registered with the Farriers Registration Council
